Boost for Taranaki engineering apprenticeships

Engineering Taranaki Consortium (ETC) has secured a contract from Government to provide an option for engineering apprenticeships in Taranaki.

The consortium applied to be part of the new Direct Funding Scheme in Taranaki through the governments competitive bidding process, which enabled employers/industry  direct access under specific criteria, to government funding, which had historically only been accessed by Industry Training Organisations (ITO’s).

The three other successful applicants were Southern Group Training (Northland and Southland); Ryman Healthcare (nationwide); NZ Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated (Bay of Plenty).

ETC is a collective of Taranaki’s major engineering firms,  with membership comprising:

  • Wells Electrical
  • Worley Parsons
  • Fitzroy Engineering
  • ITL
  • AMTEC
  • Armatec
  • Croucher & Crowder
  • MECO
  • Pace
  • Port Taranaki
  • Steel & Tube

Venture Taranaki contributes to the groups’ activities and meetings are held at VT’s Board Room.

The group has been successfully involved in the delivery of the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme in Taranaki for over a decade. ETC's continued high performance as  Modern Apprenticeship broker contributed to the ETC approval by government - as one of only four entities granted in March 2014 to deliver apprenticeships under the new New Zealand Apprenticeship system.

ETC’s role with the 90 plus existing Modern Apprentices  in Taranaki is ongoing. This continuation of services includes the co-ordination, coaching and support services to those apprentices signed on before the end of December 2013, under a Modern Apprenticeships arrangement. The continued focus of apprentices completing their national qualifications, alongside the industries demand for a skilled and competent workforce, provides a solid platform to build on for the new and emerging apprenticeship arrangements in Taranaki.
