Chemical engineer Colin Feltoe co-leads his own specialist process engineering company consulting to New Zealand’s key industries– the dairy, oil and gas, and pulp and paper sectors  -- 26 years after coming to New Zealand on an initial two-year contract.

The Geordie, who was born and bred in Newcastle in the northeast of England 64 years ago, spent five years as a technical manager in Medicine Hat with Alberta Gas Chemicals during the early 1980s.

The New Zealand oil and gas industry, centred on Taranaki, has certainly been busy over the past month or so with national and multinational companies active over almost the length and breadth of the country.

While one minor American explorer has exited New Zealand and a few have relinquished some exploration acreage, many more have renewed existing licences or won new ones in a variety of regions – from the onshore East Coast down to Southland.

Huge economic opportunities exist in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the fifth largest in the world, and Port Taranaki is gearing up to support increased oil and gas exploration and development efforts.

“There are wonderful opportunities out there for New Zealand and New Zealanders, with good jobs, good facilities and good financial returns,” says port chief executive Roy Weaver.

New Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley toured Taranaki’s oil and gas facilities for the first time in late February and liked what he saw.

“What impressed me the most about the visit was the very large, the huge contribution the industry makes to the region’s economy, and the national economy, but its environmental footprint is very small,” Heatley said, referring the physical size of the sites dotted around the province and offshore.

The New Zealand oil and gas industry was very busy during 2011, with most activity still centred around Taranaki and all of the few new discoveries made in the country’s only producing petroleum province.

The highlights far outweighed the lowlights, with more companies than ever exploring regions, from Northland to Southland and Otago, for conventional petroleum products, the unconventional coal seam gas, shale oil and gas, and now even mudstones and siltstones.

The Ministry of Science and innovation (MSI) is inviting interested applicants to apply for funding to undertake work consistent with the objectives in its 2012 Sector Investment Plans. One of these Sector Investment plans relate to Energy and Minerals.

The Energy and Minerals Research Fund has a total of $12m per annum invested for research. Of this approximately $3.5 million p.a. will be available for investment in new programmes in accordance with the RFP, commencing October 2012.
