Since its first investment in exploration 100 years ago, Shell has helped to lay the foundations for today's thriving oil and gas industry. Its operating ventures produce around 80 percent of the gas needed for the New Zealand market. Shell's exploration and production centres on three major assets in the Taranaki region. We are majority equity holder (83.75%) of the Māui gas and condensate field and have a share in Kapuni (50%), New Zealand’s oldest gas and condensate field. Shell is also the largest joint venture partner (48%) and the operator of the technologically advanced Pohokura field. Shell has a 50 percent share Shell Todd Oil Services (STOS), which operates the Māui and Kapuni fields. It is a major employer in New Zealand, with more than 300 staff in Taranaki and Wellington. Shell is constantly looking at new opportunities for exploration such as the Ruru prospect off the South Taranaki coast.

Awards, achievements, technological advancements:
Pohokura recieved a sustainable development award and technical innovation award from the Taranaki Regional Council in 2010. The entire operation in unmanned and managed from Shell's offices in the entre of New Plymouth. It was the first petrochemical plant in the country to be remotely controlled and meets approximately 10 percent of New Zealand's gas needs. The field was developed using an innovative technique called horizontal directional direlling to preserve the culturally and environmentally sensitive local shoreline.
